introductions

hi there meg and all,
i am happy to find you here, i was at the gaia foundation meeting on thursday and heard you existed. i am currently reading the transition handbook by rob hopkins and finding it just compulsive in the way that it is a look at the post oil world with a positive bent. i have spent the last couple of years inadvertantly 'getting ready' for the change we need to go through: i make furniture for our family from recycled/thrown away materials, i have tried growing food albeit unsuccessfully, i compost all kitchen scraps and lawn clippings, have studied renewable energy electrotechnology at tafewa night school and have a list of projects as long as my arm which i hope to get round to some day (solar thermal generators, backyard aquaponic set-up, permaculture design course, greywater recycling.........you get the picture). anyway i see some of the posts on the forum are a little bit dated and i am wondering if you have recently set up a regular meeting schedule. it would be great to hook up with like-mindeds and try plan our way out of this mess.

Hi all!
Great to see the wheels slowly turning on this forum.
I am currently studying Energy Studies at Murdoch Uni. It's been major eye opener for me, and we have decided regardless of all the pros and cons and arguments for or against issues of climate change, post oil, etc, I am making the change/transition because it is something I want to do...something I believe in.
Just hope we are able to convince more people that it is something worth doing to...

Sounds like you've been following your "instincts" for quite a while and are well on your way to being ready for the steady slide down the energy descent. As far as the forum goes, POP is slowly gaining momentum, and I reckon it will "hot up" as more people get involved. We don't have a regular meeting schedule, but we COULD if there was enough interest, as the great people at City Farm (Tom and Rosanne) have opened their arms to us and offered the place as a meeting venue for free whenever we want it! I guess there just has to be a reason to meet....

We are following the Transition Towns model - have just set up a Temporary Initiating Hub and are now working on "raising awareness" in Hub members "towns". In the meantime, I suggest you get yourself on the Members and Mentors Map on this site (look under Group Home) and start connecting with like minded others in your area, plus get serious about upskilling yourself (especially the food growing thing)!!! There are workshops happening regularly to help - just check our Events.
